Try talking about him or your self. this way you learn more about him and he with you and you can grow closer. Also try talking about sports, his favorite team or yours. or you can talk about current events, like news, festivals, movies. get use to pauses can even in on going relationships it sometimes happens only then it doesn't seem so weird.
