do you think its weird for someone to "brush up" on conversation topics before leaving the house, for ex: spending time looking it up on the internet or watching the show that everybody likes.

the idea sounds a little unsettling to me. i want to do it, to get over my shyness, but it feels like brushing up on conversation topics is like going out of your way for others to like you.

It's definitely going out of your way if it's not something that you normally do, but that's not a bad thing. If you want to talk to people, it's good to be informed. Reading up on the latest news and watching popular television shows are things we all do. Perhaps we do it just for enjoyment, but also because it makes us feel connected to others. I love discussing sports, TV shows, world events, and popular culture with my friends, family, and people I meet. These things connect everybody in the world and make it easier to realize how similar we are to other people. So if you're changing up your usual routine to do this, of course you're going out of your way, but there's nothing wrong with that!
