That's not true. It has nothing to do with predicting a period.
You'll find out after more experience; everyone is different, so once you have had your period for a while you'll be able to recognize the signs easily. The most obvious sign is getting cramps. Others include a change in your mood and brownish/light red discharge.
The easiest thing you can do to predict is to simply record it on your calendar if you have your period regularly [if you don't, don't worry; being irregular is common for the first few years].
Meanwhile, [if you have started your periods] make sure to carry a pad or tampon with you wherever you go, no matter what. This way, if you predict wrong (or if your period is random), then there's no penalty. It saves you so much anxiety and fear.
