does anyone play the drums as in an actual drumset? how did you learn? what are good books?

I think drums are one of the few instruments that you really can't do much with if you only read books. But some books on drum hardware and terminology might be helpful.

To play drums you need natural rhythm. Why bother playing drums if you don't have rhythm, right? You also need stamina, I sweat like hell while playing and I don't even do hardcore drumming.

I strongly recommend taking lessons, even if it's just a few to get you started. You'll learn techniques that will save you energy and allow you to play better and faster. Drum lessons, as with any instrument, usually will go for about $20 an hour.

I also like to watch videos of drummers, and this might sound silly but it can be good to play 'air drums' to the videos to practice.

You also need to be willing to invest in your drums. They are very pricey, not only to get your starting kit, but maintenance can cost a lot, especially when you have to start replacing drum heads and cymbals. Even drumsticks can put a dent in your wallet.

You can be great if you practice a lot. It can be tough to get going, but don't get frustrated if your heart is truly interested in drumming. It's so much fun.
