Ok, I am overweight and have been for a few years. I desperately want to change that, but the first thing I need to know is how to plan a good workout. I have 2 workout DVDs that I plan to use. One is a dance video, and one is Fat Blasting Yoga. I also want to be able to run the mile in less than 20 minutes, but right now it takes me five minutes just to run 1/4 of a mile, and after that, i get tired. (These are all important factors for me...please think about these when you answer this question.) Thank you so much! (link)
First of all, I want to congratulate you on your approach to not being overweight anymore. I'm very proud of you as it's a hard thing to do!! You are a step ahead of many people.

The DVDs sound good. fitnessmagazine.com has videos that I find good.

The key to burning fat is doing cardio. Those DVDs are considered cardio. I personally like to attend aerobics classes, kickboxing being my favorite. Doing cardio at least 30 min, 3-5 times per week, and weight training or pilates 2-3 times a week is great. Don't forget to eat healthy, cut out all junk foods, and drink plenty of water!

By the way, I highly advise against traditional crunches and sit-ups. Many people do it incorrectly and end up straining their neck and backs. Try to do crunchless abs. Here are some of my favorite ab workouts:

In order to improve your mile time, you have to keep running. You should first try running in intervals. Run a lap, walk a lap, run a lap, walk a lap. If this is too much, try running 1/2 of a lap, walking 1/2 of a lap, and so on.

It may be easier if you go with the aerobics workouts first, and then try running. Your heart will be in better shape.

Also, you may want to consult a physician. If you are overweight, you don't want to overexert yourself as that could be very dangerous.

Good luck!!!
