Q: i am a decent looking girl, but i have never been great around boys. i am not shy, but i am just not good at flirting. whenever i find a boy DOES like me, it always seems like they are the ones i don't like! i always find something wrong with them. this is going to sound stupid, but there's a boy in my grade who i don't know well but i have always had a feeling he likes me (he compliments me, trys to startup convos, etc.) i don't have anything against him, and i think he's nice...but sort of awkward...like not totally sure of himself). he is also sort of emo punkish...not usually my type (like he likes screamo music, etc.) it's just not really my thing. i don't know what to do...whenever i am at home i think "oh well maybe i'll give him a chance", but as soon as i see him i change my mind & feel all awkward. what should i do?!?!
You have the exact same problem as me. I'm quite shy around new people and am not very good at flirting. If someone fancies me it always seems to be the ones I don't like. But once there was this guy who asked me out and even though I didn't like him I just thought I'd give him a chance because I wanted a boyfriend for once. It totally didn't work out and I ended up blocking all his calls whch made me feel realy mean. So if you don't like a guy, then don't date him. I think, if you have to ask yourself 'Do I fancy him?' then you probably don't. Generally, if you fancy someone, you know, no doubt about it.

I've realised now that I'm quite picky and have high standards, which although is annoying I'm not going to lower them because I know that if I do I won't be happy and might feel used. It sounds like you probably have high standards too, don't lower them cos it will make you unhappy. You probably start to change your mind and feel awkward around him because you don't actually fancy him. It's a case of wanting a boyfriend, not wanting HIM.

But seeing as you don't know him very well, try to think of him as a friend and chat to him. If after a while you fancy him then ask him out. This doesn't mean asking yourself every month 'Do I fancy him yet?'. You will know straight away if you fancy him.

Wow. Thank you so much - that answer was exactly what I needed to hear. I am glad I am not the only person who has ever felt like this, and now I think I understand what is going on with me. Thank you again for your help!
