I'm reading Dreamland by Sarah Dessen right now, and I've become kinda confused. They talk alot about 'lighting the bowl' or 'preparing the bowl' when referring to smoking pot. I'm not a pothead, nor do my friends talk to me about it, so I'm confused as to what you do to smoke pot. If you could please explain the 'bowl method' so I could better understand the book, I would greatly appreciate it. :] (link)

Part of this depends on the pipe you are using, and this goes for more than just pot. Mind you I've not touched a single drug in nearly 8 years, but I cannot imagine that things have changed much in that short of a period.
As for preperation:
Some pipes need to have a screen put into the bottom of the bowl. Someone earlier posted that you can use foil, but you can also buy little mesh screens someplaces. I liked those a lot personally, they were quite handy. The reason you need that is otherwise you will suck in a piece thats red-hot, right down your throat if you aren't careful.
Cleaning is a big thing, particularly if you smoke a lot. Resin builds up, and just like a normal tobacco pipe you need to clean it out. You can scrape it out until it gets too bad, then I always got out the alcohol and went to town. A lot of people I knew actually saved the resin they scraped out...myself I never went to all that trouble.
You cant jam a bud into a pipe all willy-nilly, it won't burn as well. I always tore them into smaller pieces that burned better. This is the same reason tobacco isnt just jammed into cigarettes in large pieces. Also its highly recommended to take all the seeds out beforehand. Then you just pack it down a little.
Of course different people do it differently.
Hopefully this is enough to sate your curiousity, and you wont feel the need to try it firsthand.
