You have to try to put yourself in his position.
If you had a really big crush on someone, chances are, you wouldn't even be able to talk to him, let alone ask him to a dance.
Asking a girl out is an intimidating thing, especially for young men. They are basically putting themselves on the line. By asking, they are leaving themselves perfectly vulnerable for the kind of shoot-down that could totally ruin a person's day. When Sadies' comes around, you'll understand.
Make it easier for him. Show that you're interested so he won't be afraid that you'll say no. Trust me, if a guy knew a girl would say yes, he would ask her out immediately.
