Q: hellllo

ok so lately whenever i look at the mirror i look at like every. single. thing. on my face. and i notice all the things wrong with it. it's really starting to annoy me because every day i notice more and more t hings that are wrong with my face and i never used to be like this! i used to just look in the mirror from like a foot away, for 10 seconds after i put on mascara and be like "i look nice today" and then be satisfied. now i have to pay attention more, and i just want to know how i can make myself not care as much. i still want to look nice but i just think that if i keep doing this my self esteem will definitely go down...and it's weird because im not girly at all or anything im just paranoid about how my eyeliner looks in certain lighting and stuff. i actually put on makeup inside and outside and see if i can tell the difference. i hold a mirror up and see how i look directly in the sun, or the shade, or with my back turned to the sun. i dont know if im like OCD or what but its bugging the shit out of me and dont know why i do it.

sorry its long.
You aren't that unusual for being concerned about your looks. I always felt silly having someone catch me look in the mirror, but as I'm trying to ignore the mirrors, I look over and see everyone around me looking at the mirrors instead! Even if there's a store window or shiny car, I always see someone stop and fix their hair or something.

There's also a more technical side of this. You say there was a time you didn't care so much, you were younger, right? I'm guessing you are a teenager now. There are actually certain psychological factors that happen during these teen years. They call one of these factors an "invisable audience" in your head. This isn't going to last your whole lifetime, but it will remain for a few years. Forming an "invisible audience" means that you (and everyone else your age) feels like everyone is watching them. They feel like people will notice if the smallest detail is wrong, when in reality, nobody would probably tell the differance. You can google:

"imaginary audience" psychology

You should be able to find out more about it if you are interested.

thanks a lot
