I'm a columnist on here and have been for about a year or so. I've noticed hundreds of questions dealing with depression. While I understand that it seems to be more common in teenagers now, why is it that it is mostly girls? Is it the way they are raised? Is it imprinted in DNA? I'm interested in the psychological aspect of it and hope to major in it someday, but I've looked it up everywhere online and can't find a reliable source. Anyone know the causes of this or where to find it? Thanks. (link)

Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance from a lack of seroton (a chemical which makes you happy) being delivered to the brain. The reason that women are more likely to get depression (which they are twice as likely as men to become depressed) is due to the fact that they have more hormonal changes occuring (with puberty, menstration, menopause, pregnancy). Also, something else to consider is that men are less likely to ask for help when they become depressed and are often undiagnosed and seek self-treatment through the use of alcohol etc. They are also at a higher suicide risk (4 times more likely to commit suicide than women). Depression is also more likely to happen to someone if it runs in the family. Certain things can also trigger depression, such as a loss of a loved one, or other tramatic events, or even something like money problems or stress. Some things help depression, like talking about it with a friend or a counselor, but if left untreated it can lead to suicidal thoughts. There are several different types of depression and different stages. You can be bi-polar, which is a mood disorder where someone is happy one minute and depressed the next (manic episodes). Other types of depression include Dysthymic Disorder. This is where you feel sad for more than two years, but are still able to function and do daily activities. Then there is Severe Depression which includes suicidal thoughts. All levels of depression need treatment. There are medications available from a psychiatrist such as Zoloft, Welbutrin, and Paxil. It is also a good idea to seek counseling when depressed. Together, counseling and medication can help a person recover from depression. The medication works on the chemical aspect and the counseling works on the psychological and emotional aspect to help the person in coping with their disorder and their other problems. I am currently in college and majoring in psychology, so if you have anymore questions feel free to ask me. I am very interested in it and love to talk about it.I hope I helped!
