my moms best friends son is 14/m (hes going into 9th grade) and we went to dinner with them tonight and he was really quiet and while all the adults were talking and all the kids were running around he picked up his knife and started kinda sawing at the back of his hand and the second he saw that i saw what he was doing, he stopped. and later that night he asked if he could walk home to practice his guitar before they all got home (we are neighbors and we all live close to where we were having dinner but not close enough that most people would walk home right before a big thunderstorm) and when his dad said that they were all going home anyway he looked kind of mad. so i guess i have two questions, can you cut the back of your hand (like cutting suicide wise) and should i be worried about him like what should i do
please answer me really soon because if something happened we would all be heartbroken
and p.s. his mom said that he was never upfront snotty, but he never likes going places with his family and stuff and that he was doing well that night. does that mean anything?

You should be worried, but if thats what he does, then its his business. Just talk to him about it if you guys are really good friends. Ask him why, and if he opens up to you...he trusts you. Its tragic when people do this...but sometimes its the only thing they can have control over. Talk to him about it...thats all you can do. Just DONT pressure him to stop doing it just yet...he'll get pissed. Just ask him if he has ever tryed stopping...or when he started, etc. etc. Just ease your way into a conversation about how to stop cutting. You can get advice on that here...if you want, you could ask me..I just dont want to flood you with information just yet. ;)
Oh and FYI people who dont know this... but cutters dont just cut their wrists. They can cut all over....get your facts straight.
