hello! i'm a 15 year old girl and i cut myself, not all the time, but just whenever. i don't even have to be really depressed to do it, just in the mood for it. i've been cutting since i was 14, and a bunch of my friends think it's gross. my problem is this: i can't find a reason to stop. it helps me with my problems, and i'm not trying to commit suicide (no wrists). the way i see it, i would rather cut than do drugs, drink or smoke, and cutting makes me happier. otherwise, i'm a good B-average student and athletcially involved. i write a lot. so why is cutting so bad? it's my personally choice, and it helps me. i just can't see the cons... The truth of the matter is, is that cutting is not helping you in any way. You says it helps you with your problems, but physically harming yourself to relieve some sort of pain you're feeling emotionally is not helping you. Those who cut themselves are usually not aiming to kill themselves anyhow. I'm no expert, but to me, it seems as if by cutting you are emotionally stunting yourself. Alcoholics drink to relieve any pain or sadness or unhappiness they feel. They don't want to feel emotional pain, but in a sense they are hurting themselves. They are not learning to deal with their problems in a safe, healthy way. Similar to people who cut, alcoholics and people who partake in heavy drug use cannot deal with the way they feel without having a quick fix. Cutting, drug use, and using alcohol to help you relieve problems are all things which deter a person from growing into a stable, assured, adult with high self-esteem. Unless a person can take their problems head on, they'll never learn to be happy...even if you think your cutting is doing that for you.
