Reporting Colleges on Applications Posted Wednesday February 19 2014, 10:51 am
I applied to graduate programs- and all require applicants to report all colleges they've attended, even if only one class was taken.
The issue is that at one community college, due to a mistake on my part, I was given an F in a class I never attended, because I did not realize I never dropped it. I never received credit, it was an extra class I never needed in the first place.
I have reported all colleges and universities I've attended and received credit at or have had transfer courses from. I did not report the college I had that "F" at because I never received transfer credit from that school and it would be a waste of time to explain away an F for a class I never attended.
Do u...

Changing surname to use professionally and possibly personally? Posted Sunday February 16 2014, 2:39 am
Let me start by saying that I have never liked any part of my name. My first name sounds strange/foreign to me and I have never truly identified with it. None of its nicknames are appealing to me either (many are much worse). A lot of people in this situation turn to their middle name as an option. I have two middle names, neither were possibilities for a new moniker. The first middle name is more of a sound and not a real name, and the second poses an annoying issue because it is my first cousin's (who is 2 months older than me and I grew up closely with) first name. My surname fairs no better. I actually pronounce it incorrectly on purpose when introducing myself to people, because the pronunciation my family uses sounds awful with any fi...

Forgot info on grad school app. Posted Wednesday January 8 2014, 7:02 pm
I submitted an online application to a graduate program, and in a rush, forgot to add the info. from one of the colleges I previously attended (community college, where I took a couple classes). I added my undergraduate institution and other colleges, as well as uploaded transcripts as required.
Is there any way to contact admissions to have them add new information regarding that college to my application, though my application was already submitted?
Thank you

Please Help! Panicking About Going Back to School! Posted Monday January 6 2014, 7:01 pm
Hello, I know this is probably a bit dramatic, but I'm nervous about going back to college and I need some advice.
I am 26 hears old and I haven't gone to school since I was 22. I dropped out after the fall 2009 semester. If I'd graduated in four years, I'd have been done in May 2010, but I know that wouldn't have happened even if I'd stayed in school. I don't know how much longer it's gonna take me to finish, but I still want to go back so I can improve my life and accomplish my dreams.
I don't want to sound like a cry baby, but sometimes my life is so boring I can't take it. I have a loser job and I've never done anything that great or noteworthy. I've GOT to do something to improve my life and keep me from b...

A masters degree after age 50?? Posted Sunday December 29 2013, 10:41 am
I am 52 and have decided to 'reinvent' myself. I have been in retail management for 25+ years and have hated every minute. I've regretted both NOT going into the military and NOT obtaining a college degree. Last year, after much debate, I decided to pursue college again (I have taken courses hear and there, but no degree). I want to do something more fulfilling, to help others, and to make a difference. I have chosen social work, specifically in the school systems. My questions are; am I wasting my time? It will take about 3+ years for a BSW and an additional 3 more for an MSW. Not to mention the money. Although there are hundreds of companies listed on the AARP website that seek out employees over 50 (in my case it will be 56), but I am re...

Recommendation Letter format Posted Tuesday December 3 2013, 6:42 pm
I asked a supervisor to write me a recommendation letter for graduate school.. Many programs allow electronic submission via an online centralized program. I helped her copy/paste the letter onto the site, and once we submitted it and reviewed the PDF, we realized that the formatting was altered so that there is excess space between the last two paragraphs.
Though there's nothing we can do to change anything now, does a formatting issue such as this look bad to schools? Can this potentially bring doubt to my credibility?

Passive aggressive apartment mates?? Posted Thursday November 21 2013, 2:12 am
I moved into an apartment with 3 other girls for college in October. We were randomly assigned to be apartment mates. At the beginning it seemed like we all wanted to be polite. At the beginning I tried to reach out to all of them to ask to hang out. One responded ok but I almost never see her because she sleeps during the day and wakes up at night. The other two always said they had other stuff to do.
These two other girls are very different from me. I'm the bookworm and they're the frat party type (they go to a lot of frat parties). As the weeks went on, they started to be really cold to me. They say 'hi' and 'bye' if they have to in the hallway. If I ever try to make conversation (like "Hi amy, how was your day?) they respon...

Dropping out of college due to health? Posted Thursday October 31 2013, 3:15 am
I have an extremely difficult decision to make. Basically, I've struggled with moderate depression and anxiety for a couple years. I just started college, and it has all gotten much worse. I have begun to have extremely frequent anxiety attacks, I have lost weight (I am 5'5" and now weigh about 80 lbs.), and most of the time i cannot stand being here. I am really worried that my weight/anxiety/depression will only continue to get worse.
My problem is that I am almost halfway through the quarter (midterms are next week), and I feel like if I leave now then I will have wasted all this time, money, and energy when none of my grades/etc. will count.
My mom and other family members are extremely worried. My m...

GPA isn't high enough for graduate school? Posted Monday October 14 2013, 11:29 pm
20/f
I'm graduating this December.
I'm panicking. Because I just had a talk with my sister and her friend... And I feel a bit discouraged now because my GPA isn't high enough for graduate school. Not even for a particular school which needs a 3.0 to consider me getting into their program.
I was thinking about taking a year off to focus on myself health wise and etc, but they thought that was a bad idea too because I should "stay ahead" and that "they made that mistake too" and they regretted it. & now, I don't know what I will do or where my career will end up taking me.
But even then they said it doesn't matter how long if I take off for school before grad...

Graduating college early Posted Sunday October 6 2013, 1:54 pm
I was just curious about this as it came up in conversation briefly with a few friends but didn't think to ask about it at the time.
Say someone is going to college online and they do their work quick and graduate a year or two early and in the middle of the year. What happens? Do they get their diploma then? Do they wait til the end of the year? Do they go to graduation with their classmates or are they not allowed to participate in the official ceremony?

Can't make sense of essay topic! Posted Thursday September 26 2013, 2:59 pm
I'm a second year college student studying the media, I've been given an essay topic, but don't really understand what it requires, could somebody help me? This is the topic:
Using knowledge gained in this course regarding the political determinants of news production, investigate the news production processes at either a mainstream or community news outlet of your choice. Your essay should evaluate how the political determinants align with or deviate from the theory discussed in this course.
Thank you so much guys!

Should I take a year off school between graduation (high school) and college? I don't know how some people do it. Posted Thursday September 19 2013, 11:29 pm
I am in the 12th grade, worrying about the future of course. I've been looking into this and trying to see what I want. Recently the idea of taking a year off was brought to my attention. Everyone I have asked has thought it is a terrific idea and they had wished they'd done it. I'm afraid that after my four years my life will be in a place where I wouldn't want to leave where I am because I would be beginning working. I would love to, more than anything, go backpacking through Europe and maybe even take a literature class in Athens. My father on the other hand feels it is a horrible idea and we don't have the money (even though I plan on getting jobs where I can and figuring that out on my own. I also have a job now) I guess what I need is...

Where Can I Find These? Posted Sunday September 15 2013, 9:05 pm
I want to study both Veterinary Medicine and Graphic Design, where could I possibly do this? Is it possible? If not, any suggestions?
[ Answer Question | View Answers (1) ]
Is it possible? Posted Saturday September 14 2013, 8:25 pm
I have two passions, and I would hate having to choose between them. For one part I have my artistic side that demands I become a graphic artist or cover a few things in fine arts. Then there's my inner scientist and animal lover that begs for me to become a veterinarian. I am absolutely indecisive as to which path to take so I've been wondering if it's actually possible for me to try and study both...I know it sounds a bit crazed because they are completely different subjects - art and science. I simply want an answer that's not from a friend or teacher. If its not possible - which I am quite sure it is - any suggestions?
