Applying for a job

Posted Tuesday October 14 2008, 10:03 pm

Alright, so I've worked once before for Old Navy, but got fired because of a big misunderstanding about what my schedule was and therefore I didn't come into work (which looks horrible). So now I'm applying for Adidas a year later, and on the application it asks if I have ever been discharged from employment. I was wondering if it is better to not mention it or to say yes I have and explain myself. I know you're definitely not suppose to lie on your application, but would they ever actually find out? Any help would be appreciated :] Thanks

Hollister Interview

Posted Monday October 13 2008, 12:40 pm

Yesterday I was asked to apply to Hollister by one of the people working inside, he had me write down my name and phone number on a sheet of paper (I don't remember what else was on it.) and then fill out the computer application in the store. While doing the application I had to pick what day I would be available for my interview, and I just randomly picked a day (Next tuesday I think.) And after filling it out, the guy told me to come tomorrow for my interview.

Which should I show up for?
Also, what type of questions do they ask in the interview?

Filling Out Applications

Posted Sunday September 28 2008, 6:43 pm

17/Female

Since Christmas time is coming up, I have car insurance payments to make, I will be starting college next year, and my family is tight on money right now, it is time for me to start looking for a partime job. I applied about a month ago at a shoe store. I never received a call, so I am assuming my application was not up to par. I need tips on filling out an application.

My mother helped me fill out my last one, and I do not agree with the way she told me to fill it out. She told me to make myself seem much better than I actually am. I worked at Subway last summer, [Family member was manager, which is why I received the job] and insteand of putting "Subway," she told me to put "Sandwhich...

"Lying" on your resume

Posted Wednesday September 24 2008, 7:10 pm

Sorry this is kind of a long one! I thought I graduated from a College X in May 2006. It turns out I actually hadn't graduated--I was 3 credits shy. After "graduating" I moved twice in three months (long story) and eventually started a full-time job in October 2006. It wasn't until around Nov when someone asked me if I got my diploma that I realized I hadn't. I got some transfer credits I had from high school sent in, and my degree was conferred in May 2007 w/o me taking any more classes.
Here's the problem: I started the job I'm at in Oct '06, telling them I finished my degree before that. When I found out that wasn't true, I...didn't tell them. I was scared they would fire me on the spot for "lying" on my resume...

facebook

Posted Tuesday September 23 2008, 2:55 pm

In an article published in the Wall Street Journal, September 18, 2008, the results of a new survey about the use of social networking sites and the impact this has on college admissions are addressed. As previously discussed in our presentations, we encourage students to review their Facebook and MySpace accounts using this guideline: "if there is something posted there (pictures, words, comments, quotes) that you wouldn't want anyone and everyone to see, then don't post it!" "This survey of 500 top colleges found that 10% of admissions officers acknowledged looking at social-networking sites to evaluate applicants. Of those colleges making use of the online information, 38% said that what they saw 'negatively affected' t...

Job Interview Tips

Posted Wednesday September 17 2008, 10:39 pm

Well, I have a few job interviews coming up. I had a job in the past for about three months so I put that down under past work. Well anyways all the sheets are asking why I quit so I put not enough hours. Is that a good excuse? Also if for some reason they contact my past employer and they say I wasn't a good worker, what would be a good excuse. Any kind of tips are appreciated. I kind of get nervous when I'm in a one on one session like that. Also if I'm applying for like a gas station job, what should I wear to the interview? I don't want to overdress but I don't want to be under dressed either. Thank you.

Job Help Yet Again!

Posted Monday September 15 2008, 11:40 pm

So I spent the better part of my summer searching for a job...ANY kind of job, to no avail. Now that school has started and I'm kinda buggin out about the work load headed my way (I'm a junior in college) of course the jobs come rolling in....

Ok so my friend recently started working at Delia's and she told me she could get me a job there. So I was pretty stoked (this happened toward the end of summer). However since then she's only worked there about 2 or 3 days (i don't know if that's just how they schedule people, or if it's a conflict of interest because she has a second job). Anywaysss it took a while before she got to talk to the hiring manager about me. The manager said I could come in at any time and I'd get ...

which job should i pursue?

Posted Sunday September 7 2008, 9:13 pm

i am a 30 year old male who is struggling to figure out which direction i should go.

some background:
i have a high school education and have been to some college classes, but have dropped out twice. i have had more jobs than i can recall, in many different "fields", and therefore my resume looks like a patchwork quilt. i have just started a "job" that i really don't like, but i was unemployed for most of the summer and was unable to find work mostly due to my spotty resume. i was working a seasonal job last fall/winter that i actually enjoyed, but is only available 6 months a year. to further complicate things, i *may* be offered a temporary position that would make me very happy, but would r...
