Admissions? Whut? Posted Wednesday December 16 2009, 9:29 pm
There's one thing I don't understand about college.
They say that, when it comes to admissions, they have a no-discrimination policy.
..but then they want diversity so badly that they are more willing to admit, say, a less-qualified black person than a well-qualified caucasian. Cornell, for example, admitted an african-american student with an 80ish average, no extracurrics, etc. and deferred an asian student with a 90ish average in my school. I'm not being racist, I just think admissions should be based on your academic bg, extracurriculars, essay, etc. and not your ethnicity.
Anyway, my question? What do you think about this? Do they even have a right to do this? I mean I know they have a righ...

college gifts for friend Posted Sunday December 13 2009, 6:18 pm
So instead of getting normal gifts for each other for the holidays, my best friend and I have decided to make each other posters for our dorm rooms next year at college. I used red poster board and cut it into a heart to start with. It's not terribly big, so should I make the photos smaller and just print them instead of getting them developed? I want to put a lot of stuff on it and my printer can make smaller quality prints. I don't know what else to add though? I was thinking of cutting out sayings from magazines. I also wanted to get her a couple of side gifts that pertain to college. I was going to buy a pair of flip flops and write 'shower shoes' on them haha. What else could I make for her that would be useful in college? Thanks. - 17/f

State to a JC? Posted Saturday December 12 2009, 4:56 pm
I got a full athletic scholarship to a State University.
I don't like it here! Its too small for meand the people are NOT my type. I've always wanted to go to a HUGE school. My cousin goes to a huge school and her coach takes such good care of her. Here, it seems I have to do EVERYTHING myself. Like registering for classes: Because the Athletic Director didn't get to my paperwork on time, I am on the waiting lists for 5/6 of my classes. I need those certain classes because of our practice schedule. AND the dorms are ridiculous. There's always a problem; heater doesn't work, A LOT of bugs, rusting shower, shower not hot,bed bugs, thin walls, so many! I'm not a spoiled brat, I just know people shouldn't live like this. When you...

anyone living with college roommates Posted Saturday December 12 2009, 11:54 am
how do you guys split up living expenses?
it's been a while living together with roomies now and we haven't yet divided things up clearly.
and it's not really fair for some people to pay for shared materials like paper towels, soap, dishwasher soap, toilet paper, etc the majority of the time.. especially since they're not the ones who use that stuff up the fastest. not to mention groceries too, but whatever, don't have to get into that. it gets expensive if it's just one person paying for it. it's a bad habit.
there's no way for everyone to just buy their own, right? it's kind of nonsensical because there's only one toilet paper dispenser, etc.
for paper towels a towel substitute w...

SATs Posted Friday December 11 2009, 12:12 pm
So I haven't taken the SATs because i'm going to community college after high school, but eventually i think i might want to transfer. I was under the impression that if your transferring out of community college to a university, you don't need SAT scores? I just need some clarification, thanks.

anatomy test Posted Friday November 27 2009, 3:59 pm
I am taking an anatomy class right now.. we have weekly quizzes. Once I peered over to the next person's quiz from the corner of my eye, to check my answer. I have never cheated on a quiz/test since probably...ever. I was really nervous about doing poorly, and made a mistake. The next week, our professor mentioned that we should not cheat on quizzes, and that even if we think she cannot see us, she does. I don't know if she saw me, or if there was someone else who might have also cheated. She never confronted me about it, and did not give me a zero on that quiz (I did badly anyway, just checked on one answer to see if it was right). Two weeks later, I don't know if it was just me, but when she was passing back a different quiz, I thought sh...

I am in a RUT!
I am debating on what I want to do for the rest of my life. I have gone to school for ECE and realised I dont like it at all. I am 20 and do not want to go to school fro long. i found a career counsellor Diploma program that takes 14 mths. My question is to ALL career counsellors or people who know career counsellors? What do they do? What is a day in the life of a career counsellor? What are the hours like? What are the benefits like? What are some challenges?
I found that working as an ECE i hated working from 10-6 becasue in the future if I have a family I would like to be home making dinner by 6 not leaving work. Another thing I didnt like about ECE was the illnesses, children are very germy. Back injuries ...

Advice about rushing sororities Posted Wednesday November 18 2009, 3:57 pm
I'm going to a college in the fall (Miami of Ohio) where the majority of people are white middle class. I like it a lot but I've heard it's got a pretty big greek life. most of the people that aren't in a frat/sorority join things like student government and other things. I really want to rush a sorority, but I want to get into a good one or not be in one at all. but I don't know anything about it. how do I make myself an asset to the sorority?
I'm really funny (class clown in my senior yearbook), I'm smart (5th in my class of 239, 4.55 GPA), & I'm usually up for a good time. how do I present myself so that the sororities want me? I've heard from people that go there which ones are considered "good" & which ones are...

Too Late? Posted Sunday November 15 2009, 10:13 am
The University of Maryland says that in order to be considered for a merit scholarship you have to have your application in by November 1. This might be a stupid question but if I have it in by the middle of november do you think it's possible I would still be considered?

college essay Posted Tuesday November 10 2009, 1:35 pm
I think I'm going to write about the person I am influenced by. But after I wrote it, I wasn't sure if I was doing it right. I explained everything about the person that I find admirable. Then I was almost done, but I felt like it didn't say anything about me. It felt like I was writing a biography on the person. Can you tell me how to make myself come across in the essay? Or should I just start over with a new topic?

application essay! Posted Tuesday November 3 2009, 6:20 pm
Okay so the topic is: "ask and answer the one question you wish we had asked." it is very hard to incorporate the question into my essay without making it sound unappealing. I wrote this for my second paragraph:
I wish the question “What are your career goals for after college?” had been asked. I believe this is a very important question to be asked because it explains my reason for wanting to be in college. Having goals and expectations are very beneficial to my future. There are many people who go to college unaware of their major; I think it is very essential to know what I plan to do. I will be able to keep myself focused on my goals and know what work I will have to accomplish in order to take on the career I inten...

lonely heart university Posted Monday November 2 2009, 7:03 pm
So I go to a pretty good sized state university about 2 hours away from my home. The truth is, I don't really like it here. I've met a few nice people but other than that i just do not feel like I fit in. My best friend goes to school in Boston, which is like 40 minutes from my house. Every time I visit her, I love it. I have so much fun, and love the people and the atmosphere. So, Im thinking about transfering. I just dont know if thats the right thing to do. Here, I just feel lonely and unwelcomed. I want to be somewhere where I know people and feel comfortable. Is the whole mess of transerring worth it? Or should I just stick it out for the next 4 years and hope something changes?
