Joining a Sorority

Posted Monday September 24 2012, 4:23 pm

18/f

I'm a freshman in college and a commuter student and I am considering joining a sorority in the spring semester. I am a little nervous about this because I don't know what to think and I want to make sure I'll be meeting the right people if I end up rushing. Are the stereotypes of sororities and frats true? Should I stay away or decide to join?

Can't make friends in college

Posted Tuesday September 18 2012, 3:44 pm

I've just started at university but am finding it really hard to make friends. While everyone else was able to make friends before freshers week in halls, I was unable to get accommodation because of living too near to the college- Now everyones become "clicky" and I'm left on my own. I find it difficult to make new friends at the best of times, but I've really been trying this week - but still, everyone I try and make conversation with ends up walking off with their friends. How can I make friends??

my friend doesn't think I can do it?

Posted Thursday September 13 2012, 5:32 pm

My (good) friend doesn't think I will be a good teacher. Its want I really want to do, but what she has said has knocked my confidence. She said I'm too shy and I don't have a great bond with children. I'm doing as much studying as possible and will soon be volunteering in a school to gain experience with children (as I don't have any experience yet). I love the thought of becoming a teacher and helping children learn, but now I'm doubting my abilities as my friend is right about me being shy I'm worried she's right that I won't make a good teacher. What should I do?

Posted Tuesday September 11 2012, 2:25 pm

I've just started my freshman year at a private university and tuition is about $40,000 a year. I'm not living on campus to alleviate some of the costs and I also have about $10,000 from an academic scholarship. If I do really well academically this year would my my school consider increasing my academic scholarship?

my friend thinks I can't do it?

Posted Sunday September 9 2012, 5:02 pm

I've recently decided I want to be a teacher and I've been studying so much to make it happen. My (good) friend who is always really honest said she doesn't think I'll make a good teacher as I'm shy and I don't have a great bond with children. I've never been around children younger than me as I'm the youngest in my family however I'm volunteering in a school from October onwards to gain experience. It really hurt me that my friend thinks I won't be a good teacher as its what I really want to do. How can I feel better about what I'm doing?

All of my friends are going to or in college and I can't afford it?

Posted Wednesday September 5 2012, 11:25 pm

All of my friends are going to or in college.
It hit me really hard today when I found out the one other girl who I thought was in the same situation as me started taking college classes.

I'm smart enough for college (I graduated with multiple honors classes) but I don't have the money, time or transportation!

I feel totally screwed over and the more I think about it the more it angers me and I just feel like screaming.

I want to be somebody but my parents keep killing all of my chances! My father hasn't even visited me in 4 months and my mom only cares about money money money and to her helping me with college is a waste of time and money.

My brother offered a while ago t...

The College Experience

Posted Wednesday September 5 2012, 8:39 am

I haven't been to college, and don't have any immediate plans to. But I hear people often speaking of the "college experience" and how it's not just about studying, but also about finding yourself and developing both the mind and socially.

So, if you've been to college (or know someone that has), what have you learned? Both about your self, academically, etc.

I get the impression that it's about 1. the independence, and 2. discovering what you believe and so on

So what were these precious experiences that I've missed out on?

Maybe I can make some ground!

Thanks!

Moving in Saturday, so nervous.

Posted Thursday August 23 2012, 1:28 pm

Hello, I am moving into college on Saturday. I am so nervous. I don't have a lot of friends, I have about 8 BEST friends and I do everything with them. Two of them are going to the same college as me and I know that should calm me down a little but I am so nervous that I won't make a lot of friends because I am kinda introverted and quiet around new people. I know, "make friends by getting involved" but this is my first year, I don't know right now how much I can handle so I'm not sure I will be involved in a lot of clubs and such this year. Any help from people who've been in my shoes would be so appreciated. Thank you!

Incoming freshman

Posted Saturday August 18 2012, 2:26 am

18/f

I will be an incoming freshman to a city school with a large population of commuter students. My school treats it's commuters very nicely with a commuter center, an orientation specifically for commuter students, and various events for commuters. Despite this, I'm still nervous about commuting to school and not being able to make friends. Will joining clubs help me out? Also, what can I do to be a bit more outgoing when attending orientation. Thanks!

SWOSU vs. Richland Community College vs. Eastfield Community College?

Posted Monday August 13 2012, 11:38 am

Please help me, here! Help is extremely appreciated

1. Which college would be the best college to go to for 2 years before transferring to a good school (as good of a school as I can achieve, like UT Austin or something else in the Midwest or Northeast)?

2. Would it look better if I'm at a regular 4 state university (Southwestern Oklahoma State University) even if it's not ranked high and is pretty much in the middle of nowhere in Oklahoma, or any of those community colleges in Dallas?

3. Which school would better prepare me, and which school would give me the best chances when I'm looking to transfer? I don't know the reputation of those community colleges or if a regular 4 year uni is always r...

Which colleges can I go to with a 2.9 unweighted and 3.6 weighted GPA?

Posted Monday August 13 2012, 11:21 am

I took numerous honors classes in high school but I didn't apply myself as well as I should have, by far. I had a lot of personal problems going on that just kept getting worse and worse, especially when I went to a new school, and it's not really an excuse cause people have done a lot better with less privileges (like my parents) but I basically just messed up, big time. I'm definitely not in the same position I saw myself when I was going into high school. I'm really looking forward to college being a fresh new start, with new people, and a new attitude

Also is that a bad, average, or slightly good gpa? I know it's obviously not really good or anything since my regular gpa isn't above 3, but I just don't know what to consid...

New Wardrobe

Posted Wednesday July 25 2012, 12:41 am

Hey, 17, female. I am moving into college 3 days after my 18th birthday. I'm the baby of my group of friends as I am the last one to start college. So, this will be my freshman year. I like my style now, crop tops and high low hemlines. As I do want my style to somewhat be more sophisticated in some aspects for class, I want a more sexy style as well for weekends in town with friends or (no judgments, many college students will at least once) party. I know you guys do not know my wardrobe and everything that I own but I would appreciate any type of clothing such as stated above or how to alter the clothing I already have to be more sophisticated and sexy. Such as, blazers, I have a few of those to throw on top of a blouse for a more mature ...

Consent to disclosure

Posted Monday July 23 2012, 11:35 pm

I am 17, female, moving into college next month. My mom made me sign a paper to disclose information at school. Grades and medical records and if I get in trouble at parties or something of the sort. I don't really want her to know everything like that but I couldn't say no because she'd be pissed. My question is, if I were to start birth control or anything, will my mother know about that? Because when I went to orientation, we broke up into groups and my facilitator said that those things are confidential but I don't know if that holds true once I signed that paper. Please no judging and thanks for your time.
