I heard something in the news that the students of a big city school (Myra Bradwell Elementary School) are failing. More than half of the school is failing? How does this happen? How on EARTH can we, as parents be sure that our students, elementary and otherwise, aren't going to end up like this?
The parents there said that Myra Bradwell Elementary School sent NO warnings home that the students were struggling in their grades. The school says they did send notices. If one parent says that they didn't get a note, that is one thing, but if 60% of the parents of the student body of Myra Bradwell Elementary School say they had no warning at all, I believe them.
So, if the school itself is going to lie to us as parents, either by intent or omission, then what on Earth are we to do? Being held back a year can ruin a child's future. Imagine these 60% not being able to secure college degrees because Myra Bradwell Elementary School dropped the ball!

Schools are going to look good to get funding. They will intentionally omit info that may be very important to you. They will pass your child and any other with them into the next grade if he/she flunks every class every 9 weeks and summer school too (after saying it will be nec. for the child to complete and pass summer school to be considered for the next grade). Summer school is 8 weeks worth of material worthy of several different grades of understanding (as there are actually several grades in one room reading from one generic book not made for any one grade in each core summer school class. This is smashed into 4 weeks then, representing the 36 that they were to have received. Wonderful education, I must say. This isn't even worth one 9 week session of one particular grade, let alone three flunked sessions of 9 weeks each which is what lands you in summer school in the first place - which is failing 3 out of 4, 9 week periods in any one class. 3 out of 4 nine weeks in any two classes failed is automatically up for being held back. Not any more. It's just automatic for being told you must go to summer school to be considered for passing of which they'll do anyway if you don't pass. This is 8 weeks inside of 4 weeks, 4 hours/day M - Th in your am summertime, and covering all 4 core subjects in that 4 hours of time. Heck, why don't we all just go to school for 1/2 day, 4 weeks/year and call it good enough. Whether you flunked 1 or all 4 nine weeks, you can pass to the next grade if you don't pass summer school or if you do. My kids (both of them) did not do well at all last year (to say the least as you can imagine from what I write of above),and did not pass summer school, but because they had passed the All Telling and Great Achievement Test they take during school in all areas with above average scores they got passed. Why did we have to go to summer school again??? For dicipline in knowing that if they did not do or make up at least some of their work they did not do during school they would not pass?? What lesson did my children learn again??? I agree that if your child flunks, make them go back! It is the only way to teach good responsible practices and have less of it later on with repeat "offenders of school work" as what this school has eventually got themselves into. Counselors, Principals and others will ask "Why do you want to punish the children?" ARE YOU KIDDING??? WHAT??? Who are these guys working for anyway? We are taxpayers and this is our child's school. Demand your say and your rights - they will try to make you think you don't have any, keep you out of "their" critical decisions about your child and indicate that they are in charge because you don't know what is best for your child, but they do and are there to "help" you without your knowledge or consent. Get ready, panicked parent.
I've been trying to push mandatory itineraries for parents/students in each core class they're in. This will help parents tremendously in knowing what is going on and schools to be more effective. Teachers will say they can't be accurate to the day of the week, but who cares about that - right now we've got nothing or what will be called next to nothing! Parents/students need something to go on to know what pages are to be read, what are both in class and homework assignments for credit, test, quiz (not pop quiz obviously) and project due dates every 4 1/2 weeks taped to the classroom door that they can get copies of for 10 cents/pg. from each of 4 core teachers that that student specifically has. Ask for this and get other parents too even if they are reluctant. Get the school district involved and the school board members to work on a mandatory itinerary for core classes to be posted on each teacher's door every 4 1/2 weeks.
