When ever I have a break-up I usually talk to them & I am still their friend, I just don't get as close. Sometimes if it was really harsh I erase him completley, putting everything in a box & forgetting about it, don't throw it away you might need it again someday (if you go out again) just don't let the break up get to you! If he broke up with you it doesn't mean you are a bad g/f or anything, just that you weren't his type!
