Well, uh, to be brutally honest, the people might just be saying that you can as not to hurt your feelings, however the people saying you cant might be saying it to screw with you or TO hurt your feelings. You could always record yourself and listen to it, and if it sounds good, then you apparently can sing. (I can't sing whatsoever, if that helps) :p
