As for whether you'd be a bad person for buying Converse shoes due to this? Well, that's up for you to decide. Each person has his or her own definition of morals. Consider these:
1) You are buying from a company that promotes 'poor' labor practice, so your money is essentially fueling these practices. Are you okay with that?
2) On the other hand, a very minuscule portion of your money will go to the workers. Therefore, you're helping them stay employed. Do you support this argument more?
You obviously have your doubts about buying from a company that uses sweatshops. I'm not going to tell you what I think, because only you can make this decision. I hope this helps you out.

thank you. this was helpful. i didnt know that nike owned converse! like abercrombie and fitch owns hot topic (something like that, not exactly - from same company or something) there are knockoff converses. i think ill go with those.
