advice

ok so i am currently 16/f/uk

I am Staying on to school for another 2 years
after that i want to go to college for a
HNC then HND then Degree in New Media or Graphic Design.

I asked my graphic design teacher what i would need to put in my portfolio and he gave me a few ideas. One of the ideas was to create a make-believe company and create a logo etc.

I've decided to create a company which sells Calendars. I'm gonna use my photography skills to create different demo's of calendars.

I was gonna ask the local horse club if i could take pictures of some of there horses. The only problem is that the horse club doesn't accually own the horses they just look after them. is it still legal for me to take pictures?

Also does anyone have any information on different:
Packages i could use.
Ideas for a company name.
Any other folio ideas.

I need all the help i can get so if you have ever done a graphic design course or had to create a portfolio etc then give me some information, websites, adivice...anything! haha

thanks

On you feedback:

there are free softwares that you could find online like calender builder and such... i'm not sure what system they work on ( i am thinking pc... i use mac so i don't know anything about them except that they should be user friendly) but my advice is stick with adobe cs packages (like illustrator indesign photoshop...etc) because you get to prove your skills and you get more leeway on how to design your calender -your own way! :)

BTW!!! i don't know why i haven't thought of this before but you could use blurb to order a book/portfolio when your done!!! showing off your work and photography skills in a n organized way! i've seen many use it to make portfolios plus they have a really user friendly program you can download free!!

let me know if you there's anything else :)

hi!

i'm in photography and design (last year now) i don't get what you mean by packages... but if your talking about the presentation of the portfolio then ignore what everyyyyyone says about stay simple and basic... thats because people usually associate simple with cheap and cheap usually meand bad quality... though not always .... (i made my portfolio into a colour-printed book that normally would have cost 350 $ since i am just doing one book but got it for 125$ because i found this printing press owned by priests and they were very nice to students... so back to the packaging... i suggest for the calender that you go to you local bookstore and checkout the commercial calenders they have... often they have many formats which you can choose from... mind you pay attention to paper thickness and other details like size framing quality of color... (b&w vs sepia vs colored...etc) once you've chosen what you like it's time to go fishing for places to print them... you have 2 years to college... meaning you have about 6months to a year to save up for the printing... by that time you'd be done photographing and arranging stuff on your computer and are ready to print ....

besides that i would include an artist folder (one of those black ones you see architects waling with all the time) and fill them with other pictures, art works, designs that you've made over the years with a brief description of medium size in real life title if you have one...

as for names... thats where you should be simple and creative... think of something punchy but short.... if you have any suggestions i'd more than happy to give you my opinion on which one to go with!

p.s if youre good at it, a website helps if you can design it you're self and post up your stuff on there...

oh and about the legality issue youre fine so long as you don't reproduce materials for commercial use... otherwise you have to ask permission from the horse's owner...

GOOD LUCK! :)
