i have black hair like pitch black, jet black whatever you call it and i want it red
so does that mean i have to bleach it first?

i took my hair from very dark brown to pink, i just let it sit for twice the suggested time... but idk if this would work the same way, plus my hair rejected the dye (it washed out when it wasn't supposed to after like 20 washes) but you could try that if you don't want to bleach it.. i don't blame you for that its very bad for your hair ... btw, the other answer about slowly getting that color, not a bad idea... i don't think that dying it a lot ruins it, just bleaching (my cousin dyes her hair a different color every month and her hair is fine)
