they don't say,t hat's why a it's a mystery. since those clips where he had a beard were a flash forward instead of a flashback, it means they got off the island eventually. they don't tell us who died but it might have been someone who was on the island...like sawyer? that's my guess, perhaps they will tell us more next season, i think everyone is confused right now.
