SHORT VERSION: the best friend likes me, how do i let him off without breaking his heart.
so me and my best guy friend (imma girl duh) have been tight since 8th grade and now were in 10th and last night on the way home from the fair he gave me a note saying he likes me and knows its not gunna happen tho and how it sucks so bad etc...well yeah, hes right its not gunna happen because i dont like him like that...how do i let him off without hurting him and still keeping my buddy around.. i was/still am in a situation EXACTLY like this one..ugh it's frustrating but i suggest that you tell him that you don't like him like that, you don't need to say the whole "but i don't want this to ruin our friendship" (that's just too cliche and it has almost no meaning), instead just treat him like you normally would and do your best to not think about the fact that he likes you in that way. at first it will be really awkward (i didn't want to hug this guy because i knew that he was enjoying it just a little too much), but it gets better with time and eventually he'll move on. i wouldn't go out with him out of pity though, because...1) that could ruin your friendship 2)you can't force yourself to like someone, it's just not possible and 3)guys hate it when you pity them and it's best that they don't know that you do pity them even if you do it can lower their self esteem (just like if someone went on a pity date with you and then you found out that he didn't really like you at all). hope everything ends well good luck!
