advice
I am getting a hamster in 2 days and I was going to get a Dalmation hamster but I would love to know any other breeds people reccomend that I could find in a pet store. Thanks!
Most of these "breeds" you see in the pet store are acutally just varieties: different colors of the same species. There are only two major breeds of hamster you will find in a pet store: the Campbell's dwarf and the Syrian.
Campbell's Dwarves (also called Siberian Dwarves) are littler and like to be kept in same-sex pairs. They do tend to be a little more nippy than Syrians, and are a lot quicker, but they're still great pets.
Syrians are the bigger ones you see all the time. They're the ones with all the nicknames: Teddy Bears, Dalmations, Black Bears, Panda Bears, Fancy Hamster, and so on. The nicknames are all so a pet store can charge more for these "rare" hamsters. They live by themselves, unlike the dwarves. These hamsters are my favorites. They're very gentle and sweet, and they're my recommendation.
Of course, the important thing is that you pick out a hamster who is healthy and friendly. You'll likely go to the pet store and find one who is so sweet and adorable that you'll just fall in love right away!
