I'm a single, Modern Orthodox, Jewish man.

I live in Ellington CT and I'm currently the Co-President of my synagogue, Congregation Knesseth Israel.

I work as a paramedic for the Ambulance Service of Manchester, a commercial ambulance service that does both emergencies and routine transports throughout the region.

In addition to my Paramedic License, I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

I enjoy Bicycling, Reading (Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Biographies, History), Blogging, Watching Movies on DVD (Yeah Netflix!), and meeting people.

I'm looking for that proverbial nice Jewish girl who isn't intimidated by someone who's observant. I want to settle down and raise a nice, observant family.

i dont work out very reguarly but every once in a while i get into this exercise freak mode and work out for about a month, mainly on my stomach.

my stomach muscle is very firm, but i have a not so thick layer of fat right over my stomach [i am aware that everyone has to have that layer of fat there] but it's concealing my muscle. my question is-- if i started to do crunches and sit ups on a regular basis would i eventually thin out the layer of fat or do i have to create a specific diet for myself to do that?

I've had the same problem as you. Very strong abdominal muscles covered by a layer of belly fat. The problem is that doing crunches and sit-ups like you're proposing will only make your muscles bigger without affecting the fat too much. The bigger muscles will push the fat out more making you look fatter!

The only way to lose the fat is to burn more calories than you eat every day- don't let anyone try to tell you anything different. You can do this in three ways, by eating less, by exercising more, or by doing both.

By exercise I mean an aerobic exercise that gets your heart thumping and your breath puffing. That's what burns calories.

Regular aerobic exercise has a lot of other benefits besides making you look more attractive. It reduces the chances of Heart Disease (the #1 killer in the US), Cancer, Diabetes, back and joint problems, etc...

Now, I'm not a person who likes exercising for exercise's sake. A few years ago I was taking classes in Hartford CT and the parking situation was abysmal. I decided to circumvent the problem by bicycling the 15 miles to class. It wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it would be! I've lost lots of fat and I feel much better, not to mention all the money I'm saving on gasoline, oil changes, doctor's bills...

I'm still cycling the ten miles to work nearly every day, even during the New England winters.

I realize that bicycle commuting may not be the answer for you, but you should find some way to incorporate aerobic exercise into your daily routine by doing things yourself instead of letting machines do the work for you.
