'Ello, the name's Chloe, and I've always been the advice giver among my friends. If you ask me a question or if I answer your question, I'll do the best I can to help. For extra credit, I have to submit something into my school newspaper. What should I chose? Poem or short-story? The thing I don't like about poems is I never feel it has that artistic flow that it should. And what should I write about? It can be anything but I need something interesting yet not embarassing or weird.

I love writing myself. What I tend to do, is first decide what kind of message you want to send. funny? moral? touching? real life? (i find touching/moral usually makes the best impression.)

funny: think of somehting in life that you find ironic. (ex: the word "lisp" has an "s" in it). see what media feels most comfortable to the context. if you want to write something especially bouncy, try a poem with a snappy meter. If you want to get more into characters, try a short story with a memorable cast, perhaps drawing on real life characters.

moral/touching: think of something in life you find poetic. Pick a universal theme, (ex: patterns in life/death). If you find repetition of certain sounds or words that make a visual pattern (ex:

pattern) seems to make more of an impact on your topic, try poetry, perhaps free verse if you feel rhyming would be too bouncy. If you opt for a short story, try to really utilize word-devices such as similes and metaphors.(ex: "and her hair fell about her in an ashen curtain that mirrored her clouded soul). Try to make your concluding sentence a zinger, being very touching and having to do with the theme.

real life: for real-life, there's not much of poem you can do unless something remarkably touching or brilliantly amusing happened to you that you could describe. A short story would be much easier, as you dont have to worry as much about meter of format, and you can still try to stick to the main message as well as the actual events. I find that this subject is often just an inspiration for me to write in funny or moral, as i'm constantly thinking of how the events could have played out bettter lol.
