I'm trying to reduce my fat and sugar intake- can anyone suggest some low fat, low sugar foods that are good for you to eat on a regular basis? Also, my friend told me that pasta is fattening. I thought it was just complex carbohydrates- not fat or bad for you. Does anyone know how good pasta is for you?
Thanks. (link)
There are two kinds of "fat" and people get confused. There is the kind of fat that we refer to as being fat (fatty tissue under the skin like the fat on a steak) and fat in foods (known medically as lipids-a component of the food). The second one (the lipids) are what is bad for you, especially if you have a heart condition or high blood pressure. This is what is measured in a cholesterol test.

What makes peole "fat" is any number of things: metabolism, family/body type history, lack of exercise, and foods.

Dieting is not a simple as TV makes it sound. Everbody has a different chemistry and what may work for one person may not work for another. The most important thing to remember is that no matter what the diet, veggies are always good. Fruit is also a good choice but fruit contains sugar so read a little to see which ones you want based on that. You AND your friend are both right. Pasta is a complex carbohydrate and it is fattening (see the Adkins diet or any low carb diet). Eating fat (lipids) is not what makes you fat, it is the carbs as well as eating more total calories then you are putting out (a calorie is a unit of energy, not a food component).

So stick to the veggies (carrots in ranch dressing are good-you can even use low fat if that's a concern). Surf the web for good veggie dishes and meat is prime for protein and not much fattening stuff. Chicken and fish are more low fat then beef. Cheese is wonderful-full of calcium and in moderate servings, not to fatty.
