Hello, I'm theymos (Michael). I specialize in computer questions. I will usually not answer other types of questions.Over 2000 questions answered, for great justice. I am very experienced with Windows XP and Vista, I know enough about Linux to use it well, and I've never used a Mac in my life.

While I am not nearly as active on Advicenators as I once was, feel free to send me private questions or links to interesting public questions.

I currently dual-boot XP and Vista. I use Vista primarily, with XP for games. If your problem is particularly interesting, I am able to boot into XP or even install an operating system on a spare computer.

Feel free to contact me by IM (at right) rather than or in addition to asking me questions on Advicenators. With that method, I am able to better diagnose your problem, and I can also use a special tool to take control of your computer and fix the problem for you.

My computer is nearly always on, so be aware that when my IM status is "away", it could mean "away for 10+ hours".

Question:
I would like to start my apple fast tomorrow. I have read that you are supposed to eat the seeds. One coworker said she does not because the seeds have arsenic. The other coworker said she eats them anyway and they don't cause any harm despite the supposed arsenic. What do you all think? Thank you.
theymos's answer:
See Lisa4edit's answer here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Archives/Science/2008_May_11#Taste_of_apple_seeds

According to her, 80g (about 1/2 cup) of apple seeds is the minimum lethal dose for someone weighing 75kg (165lb). And the seeds would need to be eaten all at once.

You are at absolutely no risk of cyanide poisoning. Even if you approached a lethal dose, you would lose consciousness from the cyanide before it killed you unless you ate a large amount of pure apple seeds. There is no way you could possibly consume enough apples quickly enough to be in any danger.

Question:
Do you get vitamin D from sunlight through windows?
theymos's answer:
UVB radiation is required for the synthesis of vitamin D, but not much UVB radiation penetrates glass. Google says 95% of UVB is blocked.

Question:
so ive been trying to eat healthier lately, mostly whole foods and what not, but i still get that sweet tooth every now and then and just have to have some chocolate! i try not to eat much sugar because it makes me breakout & its obviously unnhealthy, but sometimes i just need some chocolate! ive recently discovered these dark chocolate bars taht ar 88% cocoa, and on the back the ingredients are cocoa, unbleached water-filtered beet sugar and vanilla. and i think soy lecithin or something. what is unbleached water-filtered beet sugar?! is that good sugar or bad sugar? im just curious cause i heard dark chocolate and cocoa is good for you so i thought these bars were pretty good & settled me sweet tooth but i dont want the bad sugar! soooooo what is it!?
theymos's answer:
Beet sugar is almost identical to table sugar. They can both be called sucrose, and they have the same nutritional facts. If you're trying to avoid sugar, then you should also avoid beet sugar. It's not any healthier for you.

Dark chocolate isn't much better than milk chocolate. It's often very high in saturated fats and calories.

Question:
Hi well i wanted to know where they sell powdered magnesium, potassium and MSM?
theymos's answer:
Any store that sells bulk supplements will have potassium and MSM. Hardly anyone needs magnesium, so you'll probably have to buy that online.

Find a store near you by searching maps.google.com for "supplements near 12345". Replace 12345 with your zipcode.

Buy online by searching:
only search advicenators.com

Question:
what are some foods that contain keratin??
theymos's answer:
Everything that was once living contains some keratin. The crunchy parts of animals and plants contain the most keratin. In animals it's mostly in bones, hair, and eyes(things you wouldn't normally eat). In plants it's in the outer "skin", like the parts of celery that are difficult to chew and the outside of corn.

You don't need to eat keratin specially, your body synthesizes it. Also, acne is caused by keratin, but eating less of it won't help.

Question:
Hi! Well I'm not soo sure this goes in the right category but I've never gotten anything from Starbucks so I want to order something good but not something they would think impossible of making because then I would look like a total idiot (haha). So is this impossible:

Tall, hot, non-fat, double shot mocha frappucchino with extra foam and some of vanilla (if they can for the vanilla part)

Thanks
theymos's answer:
Yes, they can do that. They'll mix anything for you, you can even bring in your own ingredients and they'll blend it in.

Also, did you add an image to the start of your question?

Question:
im a 15 year old girl and i am 5 ft 2inches.what weight should i be (in kilograms please)i would much appreciate an answer thanks xXx
theymos's answer:
I made an exercise planner a while ago, the part of it that optimizes weight returned 118lbs(53kg) for your height. This assumes a BMI of 21.7, the exact middle of the normal range. Here's the javascript if you want to change the target BMI(height is in inches, opt is in pounds):

opt1=(21.7/703)*(height*height);
opt1=parseInt(opt1);
document.getElementById('opt').value=opt1;

Question:
is it true that you're supposed to drink half your body weight? some girl told me that a couple weeks ago
i weigh 145lbs..does that mean i have to drink 72floz? 64 is the recommended daily amount.
is that good?
theymos's answer:
No. Don't worry about 8 glasses a day, either. Just drink when you're thirsty. The best practice is to always keep water around you, and drink when you feel like it; you'll probably find you drink around 8 glasses a day, and however much you drink is how much you should.

Question:
can someone give me a comparison on how much one ounce weighs? or how big it is? because i look on the side of like bread and the nutritional values of certain things like potato salad and stuff like that and it says the serving size is, for example, 4 ounces but i dont know how much that is? any comparison will be good..how many spoonfuls, how many tablespoons/teaspoons, compared to an object..thanks!
theymos's answer:
A gram weights about the same as a pen cap. The ounce measurement used on packages is roughly 28 grams. That sounds like a large spoon full to me, but I could be wrong.

Question:
i'm a little confused. i know that soda isn't good for you, but what's so bad about diet soda? is it because of all of the chemicals in it? so if i were to drink a 'fruit' juice tropicana peach papaya or something, that's around 250 calories in a bottle. i basically consider that sugar water since there's not too much real fruit juice in it, and out of the ingredients the first few are sugar. so, what i'm asking- which is worse to drink .. the artificial fruit juice, or diet soda. i know that it's okay to drink them both every one in awhile, but i'm asking what's just plain old WORSE for you.

and why is diet soda so bad?
theymos's answer:
Juice would probably better, since it's not carbonated. Read:

Question:
15/f/Australia

Like, I know you drop the weight and stuff, and I was just wondering what else happens. I remember someone saying what happened but I forgot. Don't worry I'm not even thinking about only eating it, I'm just curious.
theymos's answer:
You'll get every disease under the "deficiency disease" column of this chart:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitamin#Human_vitamins
If you also take vitamin supplements, I image you'd still have other problems, celery has almost nothing in it.

Question:
does coffee stunt ur growth?
theymos's answer:
No. Stunted growth comes from malnutrition, and coffee doesn't cause that. If you drink coffee instead of eating, then it would stunt your growth.

Question:
what is it exactly
i looked at google
but they use big words
ahahah
so can anyone tell me like what it is
what are the symptoms
is it life threatening
does it go away
i just wanna know
thanks
theymos's answer:
It's symptoms are like those of a cold, strep throat, or the flu. It's not usually life threatening, but it can be if not treated. It will usually go away on its own after many weeks, but it might leave permanent problems. If you suspect you have mono, you should go to the doctor; they can easily cure it.

Question:
Im 14/f and Im really interested in becomimg a vegetarian/vegan. I was wondering do you have ot take any extra vitamins or anything? I already take One Source for Women but would I need any thing else to get all the nutrition I need? thanks in advance!!

Question:
I don't think this is the right category--maybe under health? Anywhos, I had a question about being a vegetarian. I'm 14/f and I am trying to be a vegetarian. It's not for weight loss or anything, I just want to be a vegetarian because I think it's much healthier than eating meat everyday.

Anywhos, I know that since being a vegetarian means no meat, I know that missing out on meat means missing out on proteins and such. So I was wondering what kinds of food I would be needing to eat in order to make up for the missing meat. And also if anyone knew a site that had good vegetarian receipes that a 14 year old can cook easily other than allrecipes.com.

Thanks!!! =]
theymos's answer:
There's an herbal supplement called Spirulina( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spirulina_%28dietary_supplement%29 ); it has all the protein you need. Recipes:

Question:
So I want to eat more protein becaise I heard that it helps your hair grow faster. I also want to lose a few pounds before summer. I dont want a really strict diet; I just want to eat healthy foods. What are some good meals for breakfast? I really like eggs. So if you have ideas of meals that I could use eggs in. Also, I could use a list of foods high in protein.

When I exercise, I usually run/walk 1.5 miles. and bike 1 mile. Than I usually do some exercises with weights for my arms.
Is this good enough? I kind of want to get a toned body, not just stay in the shape I am. Im 14, 120 pounds, and 5 foot 3.

Thanks
theymos's answer:
For protein, find the supplement called "spirulina". Eat about 400mg of it with each meal, and you have your protein needs completely covered. The exercise type doesn't really matter, as long as you're doing it nonstop for 30-60 minutes.

Question:
does anyone know what they do to you at a physical to determine whether or not you've got an eating disorder? i have one tomorrow. tell me if you know anything about what they do to you?
theymos's answer:
If your weight is far from normal they'll ask you some questions. They might give you a psychological exam(where they ask you more questions). They don't do anything physical.

Question:
Latley I haven't been eating as much as I should, actually I haven't been eating anything, except bread.
But I'm NOT hungry. Like, not at all. It's weird, because I'll go to get something to eat and feel completley full.
And I think my parents think somethings wrong with me, because we went out to eat and I was like 'wow i'm so full' after I ate my dinner, they were like 'finally, your eating'
And they keep on asking me to eat and such.
But I'm not balemic or anoerexic.
I'm 114 pounds, 5'4. Fourteen years old.
Help!
theymos's answer:
Make sure you're eating at least the minimum this site says:

http://www.mypyramid.gov/

If you eat less than that you could get a vitamin-deficiency disease. The diet it gives you is a very minimal diet, one McDonald's meal will probably be more calories than it recommends; you shouldn't have a problem with it.
