Hello, I'm theymos (Michael). I specialize in computer questions. I will usually not answer other types of questions.Over 2000 questions answered, for great justice. I am very experienced with Windows XP and Vista, I know enough about Linux to use it well, and I've never used a Mac in my life.

While I am not nearly as active on Advicenators as I once was, feel free to send me private questions or links to interesting public questions.

I currently dual-boot XP and Vista. I use Vista primarily, with XP for games. If your problem is particularly interesting, I am able to boot into XP or even install an operating system on a spare computer.

Feel free to contact me by IM (at right) rather than or in addition to asking me questions on Advicenators. With that method, I am able to better diagnose your problem, and I can also use a special tool to take control of your computer and fix the problem for you.

My computer is nearly always on, so be aware that when my IM status is "away", it could mean "away for 10+ hours".

Question:
I would like to lose 36 pounds before August 16th. I know that's a lot. It is 3 pounds per week. I've heard that if you are obese enough then it is healthy to lose that much per week. I have also heard conflicting information that you should never try to lose that much that fast. My BMI is currenty 36. I weigh 215 pounds and want to weigh 179 by that date so that I am no longer considered obese. Thank you!
theymos's answer:
**Yes.**

Assuming average height and exercise, you will need to consume no more than 1050-1350 calories each day. Maintaining this diet will be very difficult, but you will not be starving yourself.

Question:
ok my cousin is getting married July 4th and i'm a bridesmaid who's gonna be wearing a shortish summertime kinda dress. so naturally i wanna look GOOD and i'd like to lose around 10 pounds for this to happen. i don't have gym access and i live in georgia so it's BLAZING HOT to run outside but i have a treadmill and a couple of 8 pound weights at home. i know i can do it if i really stick to it but the problem is i lose motivation sooo easily. i'll do really good and work out hard for a week or two but then i just lose interest and quit and i'll be super mad at myself. how can i stay motivated for just over a month?? [and also because it's almost summer time too!] i can't work out with a friend, so all i have is me and my house. i already listen to upbeat music when i work out. but how can i really stick to it for once!?
theymos's answer:
To do that you would need to consume 2058 calories less than you burn each day. It is not possible to do this safely; you wouldn't be able to eat even one full meal each day.

**
DearAbby92, metabolism and exercise have little to do with it. The asker wants to lose 35000 calories (10 pounds) in 17 days. 2058 calories MUST be burnt per day to achieve this. Assuming average height and weight for an 18-year-old female, asker will burn 1950 calories from just staying alive. So asker must burn an *additional* 108 calories each day from exercise. This is equivalent to about 40 minutes of exercise. It is not healthy to eat nothing and exercise every day for 17 days. You would probably die.

Question:
(please no lectures about what foods in this list you think i should or shouldn't be eating, i'm going to eat what i like, i just want to do it in the right moderation for a maintainable weight).

If I stay at or below 1500 calories a day and I work out for about 10-20 min a day 4-5 days a week (doing things like aerobics, belly dancing, yoga, running) will i lose a natural flow of weight?

(to give you an idea of what i will eat...i have some health shakes (160 calories per serving) that are like ensure where you can drink them when you are busy or to replace a meal but they have a meal supply of nutrients- 2 of those, a grilled chicken sandwich with no sauce at 400 calories, 2 ice cream sandwich bars that are 100 calories each, and a pack and a 1/2 of ramen at about 300 calories and i usually drink water but let's go ahead and add in 3- 8oz glasses of arizona iced tea at 90 calories per serving...1490 calories for the day.

i just want something regular that i can enjoy and keep up with. that is what i am doing right now. I just haven't made it totally regular yet.
theymos's answer:
This is the formula for calculating the amount of calories you need to consume to keep your weight at the current level:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harris-Benedict_equation
Don't forget to apply the activity modifier.

You need to keep your net calorie consumption below the result of that formula to lose weight. What you eat doesn't matter, as long as the total calories you eat is less than that. You can also burn calories through exercise, but the amount of calories burned through your exercise regimen is negligible - perhaps 50 calories each time. You can still apply your exercise to the activity modifier mentioned above, which should be 1.55 (moderate exercise) for your exercise regimen.

Question:
"Otherwise you may spend months building rock hard abs under a layer of fat that is completely unaffected by your efforts."

1 what does that mean?
2 like if i only do sit ups i wont even lose the fat...!?
3 why or why not?
theymos's answer:
Situps will burn calories, and they will help lose weight, but the weight loss could be from any part of your body. There's no way to choose where you lose fat; it's genetic. Situps will not specifically burn stomach fat.

Situps are guaranteed to increase your abdominal muscles, though. If you're burning more calories than you eat, the fat will go away and be replaced by muscles. If, however, you're eating more calories than you burn, the fat will stay there and you'll be building muscle; you'll get bigger.

It's therefore best to exercise all of your muscles equally.

Question:
Alright, I am about 5'2 , and I weigh over 150. Yes I know I need to lose weight. But here is my question,
- I have a treadmill, and I was wondering If I ran about an hour everyday on it, would I lose weight ?
- I'm looking to lose all of it in my legs & stomach.
- I DON'T eat healthy. I don't like salads or most healthy food, so don't tell me to eat healthy.
- Sits up never seem to work for me. But I do them probably three times a week.
- Please help me here. I don't have enough money to go buy a new machine to work out with, and cardio I could try but I don't think I will enjoy it.

Please answer all of my questions. Thanks in advance.
theymos's answer:
You will lose weight if you burn more calories than you consume. If you eat 3000 calories and burn 2500, you will gain weight, no matter how many of those calories were lost due to exercise.

Question:
what do electrolytes do for the body? please e-mail me at smiley_86_85@yahoo.com
theymos's answer:
ELECTROLYTES ARE WHAT PLANTS CRAVE!!!

In energy drinks, "electrolytes" are just a marketing term for salt. When you sweat, you lose salt. If you sweat or drink too much, the salt in your body will become more scarce and you'll have medical problems.

You only actually need additional electrolytes/salt if you're planning on drinking more than a gallon of liquids within a few hours. Running a marathon or crossing a desert, for example.

Question:
if i only drank water, and ate fruits, veggies, and salads would i lose any weight? i mean without working out.
i know clearly if i did that, i would lose weight if i was exercising too, but i am asking if i didn't. and i don't like fish and i guess that's healthy or whatever, i am so picky, so it's hard to eat healthy.
theymos's answer:
What you eat doesn't matter when losing weight. It's how many Calories you eat and burn. Fruit and salad dressing has a decent amount of Calories, but if you eat too much you'll still gain weight.

Question:
Ok, I'm gonna have to talk in Kilograms, so sorry if it doesn't make much sense to some people here.

Well I'm 15/f and since Friday (it's Tuesday now) I've lost 4kg.
I haven't eaten much, but I don't feel hungry either...
So I'm wondering if it's dangerous to drop 4kg in like one weekend?
So that's what... 8.5 pounds or something?
( I used an online converter so I don't know.sorry)
theymos's answer:
If you're already underweight, then that is too much. You might have an eating disorder.

If you're normal or overweight, though, then that amount of weight loss isn't exactly healthy, but you don't need to worry about it. Just try to stop losing weight at that rate. Limit yourself to 1kg per week.

This could also be indicative of a medical problem. If you continue to lose weight at this rate, despite changes in diet, see a doctor.

Question:
is it true that if you eat nothing but eggs and exercise that youll loose alot of weight? like eggs make you loose weight?

i want to loose about 15 pounds by spring break in like a month and 3 weeks. please tell me ways to do that!! and food to eat that will help me loose weight!
theymos's answer:
The only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you eat. What you eat doesn't matter. You probably *will* lose weight on that diet because you'll be so sick of eggs that you won't eat very many of them. But it isn't necessary, pleasant, or healthy.

Question:
do you think hoola hooping would help me get rid of my love handles and flatten the stomach? how long would i have to do it for each day to see results quick?
theymos's answer:
Not specifically. It would just make you more muscular in those areas. It's impossible to target a specific area of fat. The order in which your fat is burned is determined genetically.

theymos's answer:
No, it's fine and normal. You won't get arthritis from it or anything.

Question:
why is running in the cold better than running in hot weather?
theymos's answer:
You don't sweat as much since you are cooled off easier.

Question:
hey how can i quicken my reflexes? does anyone know? also, how can i better my hearing and other senses, not my sight though. i want to become less in tune with my sight to observe more. anyone know how?
theymos's answer:
Every time you take a shower, do it with the lights off. This will improve your night vision and non-sight senses. For reflexes, play video games.

Question:
Okay is the 2468 diet bad? I was thinkin about doing it.

Thanks

Cody
theymos's answer:
Yes, that's horrible for you. You must consume at the very least 1000 calories per day. Any diet that demands less than that is bad for you.

Question:
Hi.
http://i14.tinypic.com/4bfso4k.jpg
So here's one of the most recent pictures of myself I've got.
I've just gotten to feel fat anymore. =)
I'm about 4'9' and about 110 lbs. I'd asked a question earlier, and got a few responses saying I should lose some weight, so I was wondering how people thought of this visually. I've really gained alot of weight lately, and I'd like to get back to 90 lbs, maybe even eighty?
I don't want to be super skinny, just skinnier than I am now.
The problem I've got is my stomach. I seriously look pregnant or something in all my shirts, anymore, if I'm not wearing a jacket, and it makes me feel really unconfident.

So.. help? lol.

theymos's answer:
You look fine, definitely not that bad; I can't really tell at that angle though. According to my patent-pending technologies(which may or may not be accurate), you should weight exactly 100 pounds. This will give you a body-mass index of 21.7, the exact middle of the "normal" range.

Question:
Is there anyone in the Spring, Tx area that maybe wants to work out with me? I used to have a gym membership but I figured it might be kind of useless if I can do other things at home. I just want someone that will run, jog, ride bikes, swim, play tennis with me. :]

Thanks

p.s. I don't need any smart comments about how I shouldn't look for people online or any clearly obvious answers. I've had my share of "know-it-alls" and I have my own common sense, I don't need yours.
theymos's answer:
Take a look at craigslist:
http://houston.craigslist.org/
In 5 minutes I found a few people looking for a gym partner. If you can't find anyone, you can post, for free. Use houston's craigslist(like I link to), since it's closest to you. Good luck!

And I'll be reporting the ones below me, so you don't have to.

Question:
Would you consider it "dangerous" to consume 500 calories per day and do an hour or more of cardiovascular exercise plus crunches/push-ups/leg lifts/jumping jacks ever day?
theymos's answer:
yes, you should consume at least 1500-2500 calories per day.

Question:
is there a website that you can enter your age, weight, height, etc. and it will give you a diet and excercise plan for weight loss? if so, can you give me the link? thanks!
theymos's answer:
I just finished making such a site. No guarantees it's accurate, I'm still ironing out the wrinkles:
http://www.geocities.com.nyud.net:8080/theymos/test.html
You should ignore the "minutes per exercise" part, that's inaccurate. But it should give you an accurate optimal weight, a goal for calorie consumption, and an idea of how many calories you should burn. If you don't like mine you can try this one:
