My alcoholic mother neglected my education from age 5 by "unschooling" me (it's code for lazy parents who are too prideful to admit their failure in homeschooling) I'm going to be 18 next year and I've never been so depressed and hopeless.

I tried to motivate myself to catch up academically years ago, but it just made me too upset to even open a text book.

I have no idea what to do. I feel like I have no future.

The primary purpose of most schools is to keep kids busy while their parents are working. 50-80% of time at school is spent on things unrelated to actually learning anything. And when they do teach you anything, they teach it at the slowest possible pace so that the unmotivated don't get left behind. I honestly think that someone with zero education, but a *drive* to catch up, will be able to equal or exceed most school-educated people in only 2-4 years of intense study. It is entirely possible for you to even go to college if you work at it, though you might go a few years later than normal.

And I'm sure you weren't just staring at a wall for 13 years. Whatever you were doing, you must've learned *something*. In some areas, you're probably better than other people.

I recommend getting the most in-depth GED study book that you can and working toward a GED. If you find it difficult to work on your own, most community colleges will offer fairly cheap GED study courses. For math, khanacademy.org is a good site -- it's designed to teach math in the same way that schools do nowadays. On khanacademy.org, go to "Subjects" in the upper left and then go through "math by grade", starting wherever you feel comfortable.

Once you get a GED, you will have roughly the same level of raw education as a high-school graduate, and you will be able to get into many 2-year universities if you want. After getting an associate degree at a 2-year university, you will be able to transfer into many 4-year universities; there, you can get a bachelor's degree or even more. Your lack of education is a setback, but with determination you ABSOLUTELY CAN reach higher levels of education than even most high-school graduates.

Convection cells occur due to that fact that the earth is heated differentially. At the poles, sunlight shines at an angle and is spread out over a much larger area. This creates a high pressure area of colder, denser air. As the cold air sinks, it becomes even colder. It moves away from the poles to low pressure areas with warmer, less dense air. This warm air is pushed up by the buoyant force of the colder denser air. As the warm air rises, it cools, and the convection cell recycles itself, over and over again.

-due to THE fact
-Earth (capital "E") is heated UNEVENLY
-buoyant force of the cold air (or add a comma: colder, denser)
-it cools, and the process repeats.

I saw your answer to that question and I got really interested in the program.

How do I go about using it?

**Mnemosyne is free, it's just difficult to find the correct download link. The link I provided will always point to version 1.2.1, which may not be the most current version in a few months.**

Mnemosyne is a flashcard program that shows cards according to an advanced algorithm. With it, you can memorize a large amount of information is a short period of time.

Download, install, and start Mnemosyne. Click the "add cards" button. Put a question in the top box and an answer in the bottom box. Click "0" and continue until you have added all of the information you want to memorize. There are also pre-made sets of cards on the Mnemosyne site.

After you have added all of the data to be memorized, the main Mnemosyne window will present you with one of the questions you created. Think of the answer and click "show answer". If you were correct, click a number between 2 and 5, depending on how much effort it took to remember it. If you were incorrect, choose 0 or 1, depending on how close you were.

Do this for as long as you want. If I'm trying to "cram", I will generally get the "Not memorized" count to zero and then "work ahead of schedule" a few times in intervals of a few hours. The person who asked that question could easily memorize her 17 symbols in just a few hours using Mnemosyne.

For best results, you should use Mnemosyne every day. It will ask you a few questions that it thinks you might have forgotten by now (not the entire set), and in this way you will never forget the data memorized with Mnemosyne.

This is the download link you should use for Mnemosyne (valid only for the next few months):

I already have a test tomorow on Lab safety. ANd she gave us 17 symbols to remember, and then their exact definition! What is a good way to remember their definition! I am horrible at memorizing things, expeciially in a couple days

I learn really well by listening to things over and over again. I have big tests and exams in a week and a half and was wondering if it was possible to record myself making study notes then put that onto iTunes and get it to my iPod or something like that? I have an 8GB iPod Touch that I bought from Apple recently. I also have a Dell computer (I love Dell computers and iPods).

Would I need any special programs if I can do this? Would my Dell computer already have the required program or would I need to buy and download something?

Thanks!

You need a microphone, of course. Some laptops come with them built-in, but most don't.

Use Audacity to record yourself:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/
Click the red circle and talk into the microphone. Click the brown square to stop. You'll also be able to cut/copy/paste from the audio after recording with audacity if you want. To save the audio, go to File -> export as MP3.

Put the mp3 you saved into iTunes and transfer it to your iPod like you normally would. Done.

hmmm, i understand moles and stuff like that... but this is actually quite weird. i have a project to do, i can do the work and everything like that... i'm just having trouble setting up the problem x___x

the question is

"if you placed a mole of skittles side by side, how many trips around the earth's equator could you make?"

i found out how many miles around the equator is ... and it's 24,901.55 miles and for the moles it's 6.02 x 20 to the 23rd power. i'm trying to find out the skittle's length or width however you say it, but i suck at measuring. but when i get all of the information... i still don't know how to set it up, help anyone?

It would be:
(AvogadroConstant*SkittleDiameter)/EarthCircumference=TimesAroundTheEarth

AvogadroConstant=6.022e23
SkittleDiameter=1.5cm
EarthCircumference=4007516000cm

1. (6.022e23*1.5)/4007516000=x
2. (9.033e23)/4007516000=x
3. 2.254014706367e14=x
4. The skittles could go around the earth about 225,401,470,636,700 times.

In step 1 we determine that the total length of a mole of skittles (using the Avogadro constant) is 9.033e23cm.

In step 2 we determine that 9.033e23cm will go around the earth's equator (4.007516e9) 2.254014706367e14 times.

In step 3 we state our answer.

In step 4 we convert our answer to a sentence, and (optionally) remove the scientific notation.

so I am doing a project on the election in school, I need to explain one crucial state in the election and a swing state. Any good idea for that?
I was thinking PA for the important state and indiana for the swing state, is that good?

thanks, Jamie

I would pick Florida for important state and Ohio for swing state. They both have a large number of electoral votes, and they're both somewhat divided in the polls (though Obama leads significantly in both). Ohio also has a notable history of being a swing state.

Indiana is fine, but I wouldn't pick PA, Obama is guaranteed their votes. If you want to pick a state that Obama will undoubtedly win, choose California, they have a massive 55 electoral votes.

I'm doing a project for Biology. I have to calculate how much 6 people would comsume/produce for waste and such.
I need to calculate:
Food consumption
Waste Production
Oxygen Consumption
Carbon Dioxide Production.

I need to find how much of the above things 6 people would need for 3 years.

I need websites for the calculators.
THANKS

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_support_system

From that page:
A crewmember of typical size requires approximately 5 kg (total) of food, water, and oxygen per day to perform the standard activities on a space mission, and outputs a similar amount in the form of waste solids, waste liquids, and carbon dioxide.[2] The mass breakdown of these metabolic parameters is as follows: 0.84 kg of oxygen, 0.62 kg of food, and 3.52 kg of water consumed, converted through the body's physiological processes to 0.11 kg of solid wastes, 3.87 kg of liquid wastes, and 1.00 kg of carbon dioxide produced.

I have to summarize this article and the words in this paragraph are so clean and tight that I can't re-word it:

Escorted by Reconnaissance Squadron (commanded by Major Pierre Huet), we drove from the forward operating base near Spin Boldak to the District Joint Co-ordination Centre, a convenient location for potential patients that was made available to us by the District Leader of Spin Boldak. With a platoon of infantry for perimeter security and two full medical teams (one male, one female), our clinic offered care to more than 260 patients, both children and adults, in six intense hours of clinical work.

:(

When writing a summary of text this length, the aim is to highlight the important information in a sentence or two. You're not supposed to just change words around in the paragraph, that is wrong.

This is what I would write:
"After traveling to the District Join co-ordination Centre, the narrator's clinic cared for more than 260 patients over a six-hour period."

does the popular vote matter? or do electoral votes matter more since george bush beat al gore?

In the presidential election, you don't vote for one of the candidates. You're actually voting for an elector who has pledged to vote for a certain candidate. They aren't legally bound to vote for the candidate they promised to, but it's extremely rare for them to change their mind.

In other words, the president is chosen by 538 people who are themselves chosen by citizens of their respective states.

The number of electors each state has is based on its population. So there's only a difference in outcome between the popular and electoral vote when the race is very close. The popular vote doesn't matter.

The idea for the elector college must have looked good on paper, but in practice it's useless or harmful.

I am 14, I want to go to another school.
I've been at my school for all my life, and it is HORRIBLE.

We have barely any sports, no foriegn languages, and rude teachers.
(not to mention the students are horribly mean and cruel)

-true story: A kid who broke his leg, was walking down the hallway, and the other kids started kicking his leg. Then, the other children didnt do a thing about it!-

Anyway, back to the subject.
I REALLY want to change schools, along with a friend of mine, however, the school will not release us. It wont. They said: "You need to try the new program and 3 course schedule."
Which, for 1 is going to mess us up.
And besides that, i DONT want to go to the school. My PARENTS DONT want me going there either...and we've got everything, but the *darn, NOT THE WORD I WANTED TO USE* school wont let me go.

They dont even have a good reason.
That, or they wont tell me.
I WANT TO GO TO ANOTHER SCHOOL.
I have permission from parents, so why wont they let me?! I AM SERIOUS. I WANT TO LEAVE.

I've found another school, I've set things up with them.
Now the school is feeding me lies.
This is bull.

Stop going to that school and start going to a different one. What are they going to do, throw you in jail?

Your new school will help you most in this. They get more money from you and the government if you go to school there. Talk to them if you have any problems.

http://www.kyvl.org/html/tutorial/research/intext.shtml

"If you incorporate the author's name into your text, give only the page number in parentheses. For example:

According to Krushke, an assault weapon can be defined as "any weapon used in an assault on another individual" (375).

If the context does not identify the author, include the author's last name before the page number:

An assault weapon can be defined as "any weapon used in an assault on another individual" (Krushke 375)."

my question: if you were assigned to only read ONE book and write an essay only using that one book and nothing else, if you don't include the author's last name in context, is it necessary to have to put the author's name in parentheses or is it implied that you're only reading from that one book & nothing else?

e.g., if you were assigned to read a single book written by krushke, and don't use their name in context, do you still have to say (Kruske 132) or can you just say (132) ?

Your first citation must meet one of the two requirements you listed: named in the sentence or in the parenthesis. All citations after that can be just page numbers.

If you had more than one source, you would need to use the last name at least every time you switch sources.

whats the difference between affect and effect? im confused!

You affect the effect. Affect is a verb(action word) and effect is a noun(thing).

Here are some proper examples from my answers and their questions on Advicenators, found using Google:

-So What I want to know, is if the switch thing is going to affect me.
-After you reboot the xorg.conf changes should take effect. (This is the correct usage. Effect is still being used as a noun.)
-Here's a video I made demonstrating the effect
-this [is a] guide on how to use CSS to full effect
-there is a major security issue with Vista, and that will affect sales
-It will only affect your lip area, and might not be permanent
-it's never enough to affect your health.

When you are completely clueless about whether or not to use effect or affect, use effect. It's still incorrect, but it looks better.

right its long division.. i never got the hang of it and probably never will... all i need to know is what do i do with the remainder at the end? how do i turn my results into a fraction or whatever they're called...

like:
3
_____
30 | 100
____|
70
____

30 (remainder)

then what? i know that the answer is 3.3 (thank god for calculators!) but how did you get the 3.3?????

100/30 is 3.3 repeating, or three and three tenths(3 3/10). Here's how you do it with long devision:
http://img362.imageshack.us/my.php?image=longdivisionzh2.png

To convert 3.3 to a fraction, remember that .3 is in the tenths place, so it's 3 tenths(3/10).

For a CA (communication arts) project, we have to use a database, and we have to cite it. I'm using an articlefrom EBSCO, but I have no idea what format to use for the citation. I'm using Citation Machine (citationmachine.net) so if you could tell me which one to choose from there, that'd be awesome. Thank you! :]

Use MLA for K-12. Later in life, ask whoever assigned the project.

How to cite online databases:
