Hey, I'm Melody! I've been giving advice on and off since 2003. I'm a 23 year old military wife, expecting a baby boy in August, and working on my Bachelor's degree. :)
Oh, and ask me anything!
Advice
Not a big buff...didn't read the book, probably not going to...just curious. Why is it that Edward can't read Bella...he says that he can like read everyone but her...is this the main reason why he likes her and if so why? Thanks.
Neither the book or the movie comes straight out and says why Edward can't read her mind. Edward's theory in the first book was that her mind worked differently than everyone else's. The example he used was that her mind worked on an AM radio station, and he only could pick up FM. Something along those lines anyway.
Edward wasn't the only vampire in the book who's powers didn't work on her. Some of the Volturi were unable to penetrate her mind either. However Alice and Jasper's powers worked on her just fine. This is because Alice and Jasper's powers affect the physical world instead of the mind. Jasper's ability to influence the emotions of people around him has nothing to do with the mind. He physically slows the pulse, calms the body, etc. He knows what Bella is feeling, but not why. Alice can see Bella's future, but only after the future has been set. She doesn't see the thought process behind the decisions, just the outcomes. Edward and the Volturi members all have powers that influence the mind and not the physical body. Edward and Aro see people's thoughts, and Jane and Alec trick the mind into feeling pain or nothing at all. It in no way has an affect on the physical body.
SPOILER ALERT: In Breaking Dawn, after Bella gets transformed into a vampire she discovers she is a "shield" or something like that. This means not only can vampires not penetrate her mind, she can keep them from penetrating the minds of others as well. The saga's theory is that every vampire carries something with him or her after being transformed and it is exaggerated. For example, Edward was probably very in tune to the thoughts of other around him when he was human, so after being transformed, he discovered the ability to read other's minds. Jasper was probably very good at calming peope down when he was human, and after being transformed he gained the ability to influence the emotions of those around him. Same for Bella; when she was human vampires were unable to affect her mind, and now that she's a vampire, she can keep other people's minds from being affected as well.
It never flat out says why Edward is so drawn to Bella, but I am pretty sure it's a combination of a lot of things. The fact he can't read her mind makes her that much more appealing to him. So in a since, I guess it does make her more attractive to him.
