What does "nex superne" mean? It is on a U.S. Army 101st Airborne coin
Question Posted Wednesday November 4 2009, 5:37 pm

What does "nex superne" mean? My dad has a coin with wings and a parachute logo design on it and it says 101st Airborne around the top of the coin and "Nex Superne" around the bottom of the coin.

I know it is from my dad's time in the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division, but my dad didn't make it back ok so I can't really talk with him and ask him what it means. :(

Hi there,

My dad was an Army Ranger attached the 101st. It is commonly used as "Death From Above" or DFA. just like the other user has stated... but the translation is iffy. That is what it is used to represent on that coin. I understand it can also be translated as: "violent death from above" or the almost poetic: "Murder from on-high."

We do have a resident Latin expert:

Ask Fern about it if you are curious:

I am sorry your dad didn't make it back. Hang onto that coin and never forget that he would have come back if he could.

If you have other questions about the 101st, please ask away. I will pass any you have on to my dad.

It means "Death from Above", and is the motto of the 101st Airborne Division.

Hope this helps.
